July Journeys, Part 1 - The Beartooth Highway

Lots of road time in July. Went up to Montana and drove to North Dakota, of all places. Also did more hiking in Yellowstone and Grand Teton.

Here's the photographic evidence.

Sunset touches the Tetons. Grand Teton NP, WY

The view on the way to the East Entrance of Yellowstone NP.

The towering cliffs of the Shoshone National Forest, near Cody, WY.

The "Town of Bethlehem" sits on a ledge above this roaring creek.

Heading up to the Beartooth Highway. The Black Canyon of the Yellowstone
cuts a cavernous chasm into the countryside.

A mountain keeps me company as I search for a campsite.

A peaceful, bucolic scene.

The mountains impose their will on the landscape.

Clouds crowd the "crown" on this mountain.

A cleft of rock juts out of the surrounding scenery.

Settling in for the night next to Beartooth Butte along the Beartooth Highway (US 212).

Dawn breaks over Pilot and Index Peaks.

The Beartooth gives you a feeling as though you are staring off the edge of the world.

A canyon comes into view near the town of Red Lodge, MT.

A waterfall outside of Red Lodge, MT in the Custer-Gallatin NF.

A series of cascades in the Custer-Gallatin NF.

Two towering monoliths of stone thrust their bulk towards the sky.

Mist from the cascades caresses the camera's lens.

The canyon's fingers of stone reach out, freed from their rocky prison.

The small sliver of rock, known as the Bear's Tooth, is visible on the center-left of the photo.
It absolutely looks like a tooth.

Cascades, canyons, and clouds combine.

A roaring torrent of water flows furiously.

A creek cascades through a conspicuous cleft.

The tension between the water, land and sky is tectonic.

A frontal shot focusing on the furious force of the falls.

The trees are as spectators to the racing rapids.

The falls fan out.
