My Appalachian Autumn Adventure Part 3: North Carolina Nature

This installment of my Fall 2021 travelogue will focus on the public lands I visited in North Carolina outside of the Great Smoky Mountains and Blue Ridge Parkway.

These include such places as DuPont State Forest, the Cherohala Skyway, the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests, and Bearwallow Bald.

There's a lot of variety between these places, and I hope you'll enjoy seeing some (relatively) lesser-known NC gems featured here!

Ready, set, scroll!

A misty morning sunrise over Triple Falls.

A closer view of Triple Falls and the fall foliage.

A peek at the creek from out of an old covered bridge window.

Another creek peek from a different vantage point.

A yellow ribbon unfurls over Route 276.

The yellow ribbon becomes a whirlwind after an adjustment in perspective.

Looking at Looking Glass Falls.

A late fall scene plays out around Looking Glass Falls.

The creek directly downstream from Looking Glass Falls mesmerizes with its various textures.

A serene stream scene in the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness.

A very large old-growth poplar, part of a small grove in Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest.

Staring straight up as another portly poplar thrusts itself skyward.

A fine fall frolic in the wet wilderness.

A cheery and colorful Cherohala scene.

The Cherohala Skway stretches 43 miles, connecting NC and TN through
the Nantahala and Cherokee National Forests.

A  clustered crowd of colors!

Serene and smooth Stone Mountain Falls.

Stone Mountain Falls IV

The namesake Stone Mountain of NC's Stone Mountain State Park.
A much prettier and less seditious sight than Georgia's Stone Mountain, to be sure!

The breathtaking view from atop the massive monadnock of Stone Mountain.

The heart-pounding, head-spinning climb up here reveals rich rewards.

Other exposed stone outcroppings dot the surrounding landscape.

A portrait of change and resiliency.

Another beautiful Stone Mountain scene.

Much of the trail passes by other rock outcroppings that provide profile views of the main monadnock.

Bearwallow Bald beauty.

One last look at the Blue Ridge from Bearwallow.
