The Great Channels of Virginia (July 20, 2020)

Part One of Day Five of my travels through the Southeast.

Southwest Virginia is home to a very interesting series of mountaintop slot canyons called the Great Channels, or just the Channels. It's almost like a playground, but one that's very easy to lose your way in if you aren't careful.

Here's some pictures from this surreal place.

A beautiful early morning stroll up the side of the mountain.

A neat little rhododendron tunnel.

Almost to the Channels.

A lookout tower is placed atop the mountain for those daring enough to climb it.

Dozens of cracks in the rocks form the Great Channels.

Rocks are piled up in all different kinds of arrangements.

Some very abstract scenery makes for a photographer's delight.

One of the more multifaceted portions of the Channels.

A vertical look at this Picasso-esque scene.

The trail winds through and around the Channels - often becoming easy to lose in spots.

This joint in the rock can look like two faces about to kiss or a llama. Neither perspective is wrong.

A clear view through this crack in the rock.

Sunlight filters down onto the Channels' floor.

Jackal Channel

Fat Man's Squeeze (Guess who squeezed through this?)

Another lovely view through one of the many Great Channels.

Another rhododendron tunnel greets me on my hike back.
